Surigao Sur prepares for possible El Niño effects

IN PHOTO | The provincial government of Surigao del Sur is preparing measures to minimize the possible effects of El Niño on farmers and agricultural production.

Provincial Agriculturist Esmeraldo Raymundo said the province was experiencing a dry spell as of October, with occasional rainfall still occurring in some areas. He explained that the province experiences two seasons, wet and dry, and that preparations are needed to help farmers cope with prolonged dry conditions.

Raymundo said that although the situation in the province is not yet as severe as in other areas, the Provincial Agriculture Office (PAO) is preparing interventions to protect farmers and sustain agricultural production.

He also reported that the municipalities of Carmen and Lanuza had declared a state of calamity due to the effects of prolonged dry conditions associated with El Niño.

As part of the 2026–2027 El Niño Action Plan, the province is identifying risk-specific adaptive strategies for the agriculture sector.

The PAO continues to monitor the situation and coordinate interventions to minimize crop losses, protect farmers’ livelihoods, and sustain food production. (NGPB, PIA Surigao del Sur)
